WHO WE ARE
Being the Helping Hand
Beacon of Hope – Cameroon is an initiative born from the passion of like-minded individuals committed to ensuring that all young people have access to reliable and quality education. This organization aims to empower the youth to reach their full potential, thrive, and break the cycle of poverty. Founded by Fr. Divine Fossoh, a Roman Catholic Priest of the Diocese of Kumbo, Cameroon, Beacon of Hope – Cameroon is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children in remote and underserved areas.
Our Origins
In July 2014, Fr. Fossoh was assigned to Saint Matthias Mulumba Parish in Ako as Parochial Vicar. Ako Parish is located in a remote and enclosed area on the outskirts of the Diocese of Kumbo, bordering Nigeria to the North. It consists of more than 22 mission stations (churches). The challenging terrain, characterized by hilly and muddy roads, often hinders transportation, limiting it to motorbikes, especially during the rainy season. As a result of these conditions, many teachers who are assigned to schools in Ako and the surrounding villages do not take up their appointments, leading to understaffed schools. This situation has a negative impact on the quality of education, with children facing difficulties in reading, writing, and passing public exams.
Our Initiatives
In response to this challenge, Fr. Fossoh took it upon himself to provide education for primary school children and establish a strong foundation for their future. He began by purchasing three fundamental books for each child: Mathematics, English, and Sound and Word Building. With the collaboration of parents, he organized and conducted supplementary classes for the children, five days a week at 4:00 PM. In a span of six months, the children experienced significant improvements in their reading and writing abilities, which ultimately led to remarkable academic achievements. Some of the children even became lectors in the church. These supplementary classes continued for two years, until Fr. Fossoh was reassigned to Immaculate Conception Parish, Tobin, in July 2016.
Expanding Our Reach
In September 2016, Father Fossoh obtained two Cardinal Tumi scholarships at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception College in Bambui for two of his students from Ako, Ndara Victoire and Shauline Nzibie, who lacked the financial means to continue their middle and high school education. Although the scholarships were initially for a duration of two years, Father Fossoh personally financed their education all the way through high school. Today, both students are prepared to pursue higher education. Victoire and Shauline are just two examples of the numerous children whom Father Fossoh supports, demonstrating his dedication to the achievements of young people.
Formation of Beacon Of Hope – Cameroon
Inspired by the success of the children he taught in Ako Parish, and driven by his passion for the well-being and education of young people, Fr. Fossoh, in 2024, reached out to five trusted friends—Achu Romeo, Maureen O’Donnell, Colette Kwatika, Austin Gallant, and Yongka Gilbert—to form a non-profit organization focused on education and career orientation. The first board meeting took place on January 10, 2024, and by the second meeting, the organization was registered and all documentation completed.
Our Mission and Vision
During one of the board meetings, Fr. Fossoh said among other things: “It is incredible to witness how the future of young people can be transformed for the better with just a little effort and a kind heart. We don’t need to aim for grandiose goals. Let’s start small and gradually progress towards bigger things.” Despite the advancements made in facilitating access to quality education in Cameroon, a significant number of school-aged children still face barriers in attending school due to financial and security constraints. Owing to these challenges, some children are compelled to abandon their education in order to contribute to the financial needs of their families. Lacking proper education and training, these children are likely to remain trapped in persisting poverty as they transition into adulthood, thereby perpetuating the vicious cycle of impoverishment. Furthermore, those who are unable to attend school and secure employment or actively engage in economic activities may find themselves drawn towards involvement in criminal acts, and in some instances, even resort to joining extremist groups.
Looking Ahead
In September 2024, Beacon of Hope – Cameroon will officially go operational, providing two scholarships to Ndara Victoire and Nyam Diven as the inaugural beneficiaries. Founded on the belief that education is a fundamental human right, and that every child should have access to education and the opportunity to build a successful career, our organization is dedicated to assisting children in achieving their full potential and breaking the cycle of poverty. We firmly believe that education and career guidance are the most effective means to accomplish this mission. Our aspiration is that our organization will fulfill its intended purpose and enable numerous young people to realize their dreams. Currently, we are supported by donations from our esteemed board members, and we hope to attract sponsors to support this impactful, life-transforming initiative. “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be Dismayed” (Deut. 31:8).
